Sites Sharing IP Addresses Isn't a Problem For Google

It’s common practice for websites to share IP addresses and having an implementation like this won’t cause ranking drops or performance decreases.

Google Can Process HTTPS Migrations Implemented With 302 Redirects

Even though it is recommended to use 301 redirects where possible for site migrations, John explained that Google often sees the wrong types of redirects implemented and has adapted to try and handle this.

Canonical Tag May Be Ignored If Pages Aren't Equivalent

Google will ignore canonical tags where the target page and canonicalized page are different. Canonicalization is meant to be used for identical or equivalent pages only.

Use Hreflang & Canonical Tags to Handle Partially Translated Websites

John recommends using canonical tags and hreflang tags to tell Google which language version is preferred if you only have parts of a website that are translated, instead of the entire site.

You Can Use Different Types of Structured Data on Alternate Versions of a Page

When implementing structured data, it’s fine to use JSON-LD on the desktop version of a site and to use microdata on the AMP version of a site, for example.

Permanently Hidden Content Can Impact a Page's Ability to Rank

While having content that is permanently hidden on a page isn’t manually penalized, Google’s algorithms will detect this and can show the page less frequently in the SERPs.

Only Spam Manual Actions Have Lingering Effects

Once a manual action is lifted, there will be no further consequences. The only exception is manual actions for spam, as these sites are removed entirely from the index and need to be recrawled, reprocessed and indexed again from scratch.

Avoid Using Traffic Metrics Alone for Determining Page Quality

Traffic alone isn’t a true indication of the quality of a page’s content, so make sure you use a combination of different metrics during analysis before removing pages from your site.

Rewrite Low-quality Pages or Combine Them With Other Relevant Pages

Google’s quality team avoids telling website owners to delete pages, and instead promotes the idea of rewriting low-quality pages or combining them with and redirecting them to relevant, higher-quality pages.

Crawl Rate is Only an Issue if Less Frequent Than How Often Content is Updated

Crawl rate is only a negative factor if Google crawls pages less frequently than the rate at which the pages are updated. Google only needs to crawl pages to pick up changes.

There is No Way to Reduce Google's Crawl Rate of Certain Pages

You can’t instruct Google to crawl pages less frequently, but instead you can put more emphasis on more important pages to be crawled by using internal linking.

Google Can Pass Penalties from Migrated Spam Sites

If you redirect a website that has received a manual action for spam to a different website, Google will be able to follow this and is able to penalize the target destination site if you have redirected between the websites yourself.

Include Supporting Descriptive Content with Videos

From Google’s perspective, having a video by itself makes a page hard to understand in terms of its topical focus. Make sure you also add supporting descriptive content to help search engines understand the purpose of pages that contain videos.
